Commando Crawling

At 8 months Jasper started commando crawling. He propelled himself across the floor using his forearms to drag himself forward and his toes to push. By the end of the day, his big toes were very red! He was able to move very quickly. He would crawl away from the lounge area which posed a problem, as I used the lounge chairs as support to pick him up. I needed to work out a way of getting him back to the couch so that I could use the couch to pick him up. I got a spare rug, rolled him onto it and dragged him back through the house. He found this to be heaps of fun.

He also started to trap me in corners of the house not understanding that he needed to move out of my way. So after a few days of this, I made sure I had a toy on my lap so when he trapped me again, I could throw the toy in another direction and he would go after it, moving out of my way. Perfect! I only had to do this a few days before he worked out he had to move when I said “Move please Jasper”.

Crawling

At 9 months he started to crawl properly on his hands and knees. As soon as I say “Move please Jasper” he moves out of my way. He listens to and follows instructions very well. This makes it easier when out in public as he is very receptive to my instructions. He did test his boundries at one stage by crawling away from me when I called him. For a few days there I had to just hold his leg so he wouldn’t crawl away and surprisingly as soon as I did this he would just turn right around and come to me on his own accord. It is funny, he sometimes protests coming to me, however he still comes to me. Amazing!

He now crawls up to my wheelchair, pulls himself up to stand, steps onto my feet and I lift him up from there. Often he will stand on my footplate/feet while I wheel through the house rather than wanting to sit on my lap. I think he gets a real kick out of the adventure!
